SOBAN

Soban (소반), meaning "small table" in Korean, is a traditional Korean dining table typically used for individual meals or small family gatherings. Its compact size and simple design reflect the Korean emphasis on practicality and minimalism. Unlike larger tables that encourage communal dining, Soban (소반) allows for a more personal and intimate dining experience.

A Canvas for Culinary Delights

The arrangement of food on a Soban is an art form in itself. Each dish is carefully placed to create a visually appealing and balanced spread. The centerpiece is typically a bowl of rice, accompanied by an array of side dishes known as 'Banchan' (반찬). These banchan, ranging from seasoned vegetables to grilled meats, add a symphony of flavors and textures to the meal.

Respecting Individual Preferences

The use of Soban (소반) also highlights the Korean concept of개인주의(gae-in-ju-ui), which emphasizes individuality and personal preferences. Each person is served their own Soban (소반), allowing them to customise their meal to their liking. This reflects the Korean value of respecting individual tastes and dietary needs.

Beyond the Dining Room

Soban (소반)'s presence extends beyond the dining room, often serving as a versatile piece of furniture in Korean homes. It can be used as a workspace, a study desk, or even a tea table, showcasing its adaptability and practicality.

A Cultural Icon

Soban (소반) has become a cultural icon, representing the essence of Korean dining culture. Its simplicity, individuality, and versatility have made it an enduring symbol of Korean tradition and hospitality.

Incorporating Soban into Your Home

If you're seeking to add a touch of Korean culture to your home, consider incorporating a Soban (소반) into your décor. Its compact size makes it suitable for even the smallest spaces, and its unique design can add a touch of elegance and tradition to your living area.

The next time you have the opportunity to experience Korean cuisine, take a moment to appreciate the significance of Soban (소반). It's more than just a dining table; it's a window into the heart of Korean culture, reflecting values of simplicity, individuality, and respect for personal preferences.

About the Founders

We are two Korean women who reside in London with a passion for our native cuisine.

Our journey began with a simple love for Korean food and the desire to share it with others. Rooted in our tradition, we were inspired to bring the delights of Korean home cooking, particularly 'Banchan', to the people of London.

'Banchan' refers to an assortment of side dishes, containing a myriad of different ingredients that promote a healthy gut due to their variety. Our homemade 'Banchan' provides a balanced, healthier lifestyle option to the hustle and bustle of London life. Seeing the joy and contentment on the faces of our friends as they savored our food, we were encouraged to expand and share our culinary delights with our community.

Our mission is to spread the love for Korean cuisine while promoting a healthier lifestyle.
